Applied AGI has built a team of experienced software developers, data scientists, Machine Learning specialists and researchers representing the best talent available in this burgeoning field. Team members have relevant company research backgrounds, post-doctoral research experience, PhD and MSc level qualifications and necessary security clearances suitable for work in defence and related sectors.
Applied AGI has developed a set of partnerships with UK Ministry of Defence (MOD), defence sector and other organisations in a range of sectors to advance the development and application of its technologies. These give access to facilities including high powered computing and secure workplaces as well as to subject matter expertise in specific applications domains.
Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder
Applied AGI is led by Dr. Tom Girn, a Mathematician and Chartered Accountant with 25 years’ experience in leadership of technology-based businesses and development of technology exploitation partnerships.
Tom leads strategic product development and is responsible for defining the vision for the company’s product suite. He works across core tech, deployment applications in data labelling and synthetics, and in software and engineered UAV payloads (comprising camera + comms + compute + power).
Tom’s experience in leading and advising technology companies include sectors such as genetic risk assessment, chemical fate monitoring, bibliographic software, and games design. He is highly experienced in moving research, ideas and concepts, into novel and innovative products by designing and implementing the entire organisational value chain from development and customer acquisition to operations. He leads the expansion of Applied AGI in applied AI and Machine Vision in complex branch projects around core technologies.
A mathematician and computer programmer by background, he has degrees in pure and applied (operational research) mathematics. He is a Chartered Accountant and holds an MBA from London Business School (distinction). He currently chairs the Oxford Foundation for Theoretical Neuroscience and Artificial Intelligence, a charity that funds research at University of Oxford.

With 30 years experience, Craig drives advances in Machine Learning and maintains the Company’s technology roadmap. He works with our research and development teams to enhance machine perception to deliver more human-like cognitive abilities, setting new industry benchmarks. Craig fosters a culture of continuous improvement, positioning Applied AGI as a pioneer in defence-oriented and dual use AI and ML applications.
His core competencies include technology strategy, research and development, and program management, aligning with the organization’s mission to deliver revolutionary AI capabilities and applications. Passionate about integrating neuroscience insights into AI, Craig focuses on delivering cutting-edge solutions for the defence sector and dual-use applications, bringing a collaborative and innovative approach to our team.
Craig first worked with artificial neural networks during his doctoral studies in molecular biophysics and bioinformatics at University of Oxford in the 1990s. He further developed his IT skills and experience in the pharmaceutical, clinical genetics and telemedicine sector, at SmithKline Beecham. Craig has acted as a trusted adviser in the fields of technology leadership and innovation, working with the Welsh and Scottish Governments to develop technology exploitation strategies in key sectors such as manufacturing, life-sciences and financial services and with individual clients like TATA Steel. Working with Dr. Tom Girn, Craig was also involved in developing the start-up plans and strategy for Natural Motion, a highly successful games industry spin-out from the University of Oxford. He is also a co-founder and trustee of Oxford Foundation for Theoretical Neuroscience and Artificial Intelligence.
Director of Strategic Partnerships
Group Captain Jim Beldon MBE joined Applied AGI as a Non-Executive Director on completion of a distinguished career in the Royal Air Force (RAF), having most recently served as the Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance Force’s Deputy Commander.
Complementing a career in which he flew on NATO and UK military operations around the World, Jim has immersed himself in the conceptual bedrock of military power and international relations, earning an MPhil from the University of Cambridge for his research into the interfaces between US, Chinese and Indian Foreign and Defence Policies, and serving as the RAF’s Director of Defence Studies, a role in which he was responsible for post-graduate research fellowships and the delivery of the RAF’s internationally revered annual Global Air and Space Chiefs’ Conference. An accomplished speechwriter and published author on military and foreign affairs, Jim has made a significant contribution to the debate over the challenges and opportunities associated with autonomy for military applications.
On becoming AAGI’s Director of Strategic Partnerships in August 2024, Jim’s responsibilities include promoting Applied AGI’s business and collaboration with UK, international and industry partners, including defence primes and governments. In addition to his role at Applied AGI, Jim continues to serve as an RAF Group Captain reservist, working on projects such as the MOD’s Future Operating Environment project.
Jim is a Chartered Company Director, serves as a Trustee of the RAF Club in London, and was awarded the MBE in recognition of his service in providing life-saving relief to the survivors of the 2004 Asian Tsunami.
